Words From The Founder

” Words from Founder”

Friends,
This message is for youths of India who have just entered their colleges and now they are looking for opportunities to enter into the corporate world to fulfil their dream projects. If we talk take an example of the construction sector and talk about the recent scenario of the construction sector in India lack of demand for civil engineers comes as quite a surprise. As revealed by reports of various survey agencies, Civil engineering has registered the lowest placement rate of approx.38% among six engineering streams approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

Architect: Vivek Kumar Sharma

In my opinion, the prime reason for such a scenario has been the inability of the stakeholders to transform young civil engineers into top-notch professionals who can take up challenging roles in the construction industry. After giving a thoughtful consideration I have drawn the conclusion that skilled civil engineer professionals are the need of the hour to achieve a continued progression.
I am not here to criticize our present higher education system, but you will also agree with this bitter truth that over a period of time, knowingly or unknowingly, we have definitely produced civil engineers who are really academically brilliant with immense scholastic wisdom but most of them find it very difficult to maintain their success rate when it comes to the professional front and the challenges associated with it. Sometimes, these young talented minds are not at par with the expectations of the construction industry. The significant reason behind this is that there is a huge gap between the academic brilliance and the necessary inputs and skills required to sustain in the construction industry. We have just to bridge this gap by inculcating the professional skills to bring huge positive change in the professional career of these young minds.
Despite the legacy of civil engineering in India, and the huge requirement for qualified professionals working to develop the gaps in infrastructure and real estate, this field of study hasn’t flourished, with the construction sector.
The important reasons for the existing scenario are the lack of skilled workforce. India has a lot of unemployed youth, and hundreds of vacancies, but the problem is the skill gap issue. Students are being taught skills that today’s jobs do not need anymore. While the basic concepts and principles are present in college curriculum, there exists a gap in teaching and learning pedagogy being followed. The job roles that existed yesterday aren’t the roles that exist today and are certainly not going to be the jobs of tomorrow. We will have to be focused on industry needs to deal with the skill gap. Change is inevitable. Forget about 10-20 years ago, technology is changing at such a rapid pace that job roles are changing every couple of years, sometimes even earlier than that. What is present today must get modified, improved or replaced with a better alternative tomorrow,
Raising skill levels, properly equipping the workforce, providing improved welfare and ensuring greater safety on sites will motivate workers and empower them to raise productivity.
India needs skilled civil engineers for the booming construction industry, but the question arises how can we close the skill gap?
Only 7 per cent engineering graduates employable: What’s wrong with India’s engineers? As many as 97 % graduate engineers want job either in software or core engineering. But only 3 % have suitable skills to be employed in software or product market and only 7 % can handle core engineering tasks.
Graduates are collecting their degrees despite not being skilled enough to be a productive part of the Indian economy.
But what does India need to do to supply skilled engineers? Skill-based education is another immediate need. Engineering students need to have hands-on training on the basis of the problems they are likely to encounter in the real world.

One of the major problems being faced by the fresh graduates is their insufficient understanding of basic concepts. The lack of in-depth understanding of technical information, lack of client-handling skills and insufficient knowledge across domains are the major skill gaps in the area.
While the vast numbers of engineering students in the country study their textbooks, give their exams and collect their degrees, it is only when they encounter the real world problems do they realize their shortfall. By then, they have to take extra time in order to skill themselves or suffer unemployment.
The lack of ability of the individual to deliver his views effectively at the interview leads to rejection of even the most brilliant candidate. This is because training institutes do not make an effort to ensure that the candiddates develop their skills in a wholesome manner which can contribute towards client-handling and team communication skills.
The need of the hour is for our youth to be guided on the right path and trained based on the creative possibilities this industry offers. Employers are looking for candidates who have a combination of technical or hard skills, soft skills and life skills.
